A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

"The revised school code,"

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1851c.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 1851c. (1) By not later than January 1, 2023, the department shall create and administer a grant program to provide grants to school districts and public school academies for the coverage of costs as prescribed in this section.

(2) A school district or public school academy that receives a grant under this section may use the funding only for the coverage of costs for curriculum, materials, professional development, and hands-on learning experiences to implement a program within the school district or public school academy to encourage students in any of grades 6 through 12 to consider a career in education.

(3) The department shall establish a grant process to distribute funds under this section. To receive a grant under this section, a school district or public school academy must apply for the grant in a form and manner prescribed by the department. As part of the application, a school district or public school academy must submit the following:

(a) Demonstrated need for funding in the school district or public school academy or the broader community, including projected workforce needs, and a proposed spending plan on how the funds will be utilized, including expected tuition, fees, and books for the program described in subsection (2).

(b) Partners that will be engaged, such as other school districts or public school academies, community-based early childhood programs, and educator preparation program providers.

(c) Number of support staff projected to participate.

(d) A description of the program being implemented as described in subsection (2) and the number of students the program is intended to reach.

(e) Assurances that the program described in subsection (2) will be at no cost for participants and that participants will be compensated as an employee for the duration of their training, including a paid residency or student teaching.
