A bill to amend 1978 PA 368, entitled
"Public health code,"
(MCL 333.1101 to 333.25211) by adding section 5143.
the people of the state of michigan enact:
Sec. 5143. (1) By 90 days after the effective date of the amendatory act that added this section, the department shall develop or approve and shall disseminate informational materials on cytomegalovirus to educate women who may become pregnant, expectant parents, and parents of infants about cytomegalovirus and to raise awareness of cytomegalovirus among health care providers that provide health care services to expectant mothers or infants. The department shall include all of the following in the informational materials required under this subsection:
(a) The incidence of cytomegalovirus.
(b) The transmission of cytomegalovirus to pregnant women and women who may become pregnant.
(c) Birth defects caused by congenital cytomegalovirus.
(d) Methods of diagnosing congenital cytomegalovirus.
(e) Testing opportunities and options for cytomegalovirus for a parent of an infant.
(f) Available preventative measures to avoid the infection of women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
(g) Early intervention services for a parent of an infant with congenital cytomegalovirus.
(2) The department shall post on its Internet website the information required under subsection (1).
(3) To promote education about cytomegalovirus under this section, the department may solicit and accept the assistance of a medical association or community resource that the department considers relevant, including a faith-based resource.
(4) As used in this section, "health care provider" means both of the following:
(a) An individual licensed or otherwise authorized to engage in a health profession under article 15.
(b) A health facility or agency licensed under article 17.
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days after the date it is enacted into law.
