Pastor Jeff Malin, Pastor of West Rome Baptist Church in Manitou Beach, offered the following invocation:
“Gracious Father in heaven,
It is our privilege to come before You and to recognize You for Who You are. You are our holy Creator and You have extended Your mercy and grace to us both as a nation and as individuals. We come with thankful hearts today seeking to give You praise for every good and perfect gift is from You with Whom there is no shadow of turning. We acknowledge today that You have blessed our nation with an abundance of prosperity and You have set us as stewards of those blessings on the world stage. We also acknowledge today that we have often failed in managing those blessings to Your glory. We have in fact often received those blessings and forgotten to give You thanks and have fashioned them into idols. We have as a people, we confess, gladly received the blessings from Your hand and forgotten the One Who blessed. We humbly today ask Your forgiveness and seek restoration to You through faith in Jesus Christ.
I thank You today for these leaders whom You have appointed over the state of Michigan. I pray today that You will look upon each one of them individually and then collectively with Your favor as they do their work. You say in Your word, if anyone lacks wisdom let them ask of You Who gives generously to all without reproach and it will be given. We humbly ask for Your wisdom on this body of people today. We ask in faith, not doubting either Your ability to give it or Your willingness to give it. We pray that these men and women would lead our State forward with courage and boldness and that they would be men and women who lead, not from convenience, but with convictions born out of the principles of Your word and Your character.
We make it our prayer today that Jesus Christ will be exalted in our lives and in the business that takes place here today, understanding that He is the Eternal King of kings and Lord of lords. We pray that He alone would have the preeminence in the discourse of decision making and that at the end of the day Your will and desires will have been perfectly accomplished for Your glory. We humbly ask for civility in the discourse that takes place both here and across our nation. We ask that You will help us to honor all people who are made in Your image. We pray that as leaders You will help us to especially care for those among us who are poor and needy and sick and homeless and helpless. We pray that our best efforts would be to minister to those such as the widows and orphans and to help them in their time of need. Help us to do our work with compassion in our hearts and grace on our lips. And in all of this we pray that Jesus Christ would be exalted and we ask these things humbly in His precious name, Amen.”

House Resolution No. 59.
A resolution to urge the President and Congress of the United States to continue funding the Essential Air Service program to the Upper Peninsula.
(For text of resolution, see House Journal No. 34, p. 392.)
With the recommendation that the following substitute (H-1) be adopted and that the resolution then be adopted.
Substitute for House Resolution No. 59.
A resolution to urge the President and Congress of the United States to continue funding the Essential Air Service program throughout Michigan.
Whereas, The Essential Air Service program was established after airlines were deregulated to ensure that small communities previously served by certificated airlines maintained commercial service. The Essential Air Service program is used to help provide business leaders, recreationalists, and residents reliable air travel to and from small airports around the country, including five airports in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and has transported countless individuals since the program’s enactment; and
Whereas, The Essential Air Service program is important to the economic well-being of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula in towns such as Alpena, Muskegon, Pellston, Escanaba, Iron Mountain, Ironwood, Sault Ste. Marie, Manistee, and Houghton-Hancock. Northern Michigan is renowned for its vast mineral deposits and rugged wilderness that have long supplied American industry with affordable, domestically-mined metals and timbers for manufacturing. The region’s breathtaking scenery and lakeshore are some of the most stunning in the Midwest. Such a large expanse requires reliable air travel to make the region’s mines, forests, lakeshores, communities, and colleges as accessible as possible; and
Whereas, President Trump has asked for a reduction in the Essential Air Service’s budget. Businesses depend on reliable air travel to and from small airports in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, and airports require funding from the Essential Air Service program to maintain critical infrastructure like runways, lighting, and safety equipment. Any reduction in federal funding for this vital program will harm economic activity in the Upper Peninsula and have a direct and negative impact on American manufacturing and these communities; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge the Congress and President of the United States to continue to fund the Essential Air Service program throughout Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
