CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to name the portion of highway US-2 within the city limits of Norway in Dickinson County as the "Kenneth J. Moraska Memorial Highway".
The bill would take effect 90 days after it was enacted.
BACKGROUND
Patrolman Kenneth Joseph Moraska was a Vietnam War veteran and a member of the Norway Police Department for two years before he was killed at the age of 26 on May 23, 1971. Moraska was responding to a domestic disturbance call and was shot and killed as he approached the rear door of a building. The suspect who shot Moraska stole his firearm and led other officers on a six-hour chase before being apprehended. The offender subsequently was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole on December 1, 1971, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
