Pastor Richard Jolliff, Pastor of Amazing Grace Church in Wheeler, offered the following invocation:

“Dear Heavenly Father,

Our prayer today, is not for ourselves and our own self-interest, but for the people You have called us to represent. The factory workers, and retailers, the service industry, and private business owners, the farmers and civil servants who have entrusted us, and invested their future governmental hope in our care. We pray today that we would live up to their faith in us.

We ask for guidance in the decisions that will need to be made during this session. We pray for clarity, and understanding. Guide us through the rhetoric and rancor. Help us to make the right decisions, even when it may not fit our own interest.

We ask for clemency for those less fortunate in our great State. Help the unemployed, the poor and needy, and under employed. As we make decisions, may we be ever mindful of the struggle and suffering of the homeless, the low income elderly, the single parent and all the challenges they face every day to put food on the table, and find a place to call home.

We ask for an attitude of cooperation within our Government, so that even when we argue passionately for what we believe is right, we will always do so with the honor and respect that goes with our entrusted position. We ask for the grace to be respectful, and the courage to do what is right.

Finally, we ask for strength to carry out, this amazing entrusted responsibility. Keep us focused on the most important things we must do, help us minimize the things we should do, and remove the things we could do. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.”
