COMMITTEE SUMMARY
Senate Bill 88 (as introduced 1-27-11)
Committee: Local Government and Elections
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Election Law to require a ballot question petition to indicate whether an individual was being compensated to circulate it and, if so, who was providing the compensation.
Specifically, if an individual were receiving compensation for circulating a petition to amend the State Constitution, initiate legislation, or initiate a referendum, the petition would have to indicate that fact and state the name of the individual or organization providing the compensation on the front of the petition in 10-point boldfaced type. A petition that complied with this requirement would not be invalid and no sanctions would apply solely because the petition was circulated by an unpaid volunteer.
Proposed MCL 168.482a Legislative Analyst: Julie Cassidy
FISCAL IMPACT
The bill would have no fiscal impact on State or local government.
