Statements

Senators Whitmer, Bieda and Richardville asked and were granted unanimous consent to make statements and moved that the statements be printed in the Journal.

Senator Whitmer’s statement is as follows:

Last night, in a ruling issued under the cover of dark, the Michigan Supreme Court drove a nail into the coffin of Abraham Lincoln’s ideal of government by the people, for the people, of the people—by the people and for the people. Their 4-3 vote to throw out the rule of law and allow a grossly political and unconstitutional redistricting law to take effect shows that not only our legislative and executive branches are being run as political operations of the Michigan Republican Party, but that infestation of the party above people ideology has sadly corrupted our judicial branch as well.

The Supreme Court had a great chance to defend the Constitution, and they took a pass when they defended the Republican Party instead of the rights of the people of our state. Every one of us should be saddened by that result, even if you did like the outcome, because this victory came at a cost. If they are the party of principle, if defending our Constitution truly is a cornerstone of any political party or tea party here in the state of Michigan, that split decision should sadden and scare the heck out of everybody. It weakened our Constitution, and it weakened the rights of the people of our state.

Senator Bieda’s statement is as follows:

I rise, actually, to acknowledge and to ask my colleagues to join me in wishing former Governor Bill Milliken a very happy 90th birthday, yesterday. He was the longest-serving Governor in Michigan history. I think he set the standard for civility and nonpartisanship in this state that we haven’t really seen in a long time.

I want to wish him a very, very long life; a very healthy and happy birthday. I ask my colleagues to join me in wishing the former Governor a very happy 90th birthday.

Senator Richardville’s statement is as follows:

Colleagues, today we mourn the death of MIRS Chairman John H. Reurink, who passed away last week after a brave battle with cancer. John served Michigan as a state official for more than 30 years, working in a variety of posts under four Governors. He was a native of Grand Rapids and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Calvin College and his master’s degree in political science from Michigan State University.

He started working in the State Budget Office back in 1964 as an analyst during Governor George Romney’s administration. In 1972, John became deputy director of the Department of Commerce under Governor Milliken. When Governor Blanchard took office, he asked John to assume the position of director of Management Services, which he did. Finally, he returned as deputy director of the Department of Commerce under Governor John Engler. In 1995, John was appointed the special advisor to State Superintendent Art Ellis, and in 1996, he became the Associate Superintendent of Public Instruction until he retired in May 1998.

Following his long and illustrious career in state government, John joined his son John T. Reurink as a co-owner of MIRS back in 1999. Since then, his advice and guidance has helped to shape MIRS.

Please join me in a moment of silence for John H. Reurink, a true public servant.

A moment of silence was observed in the memory of MIRS Chairman John H. Reurink.
