CONTENT
Senate Bill 1097 would amend the Revised School Code by allowing districts to establish and administer scholarships for its students or graduates to attend postsecondary institutions, using funds received as a result of a gaming compact between the State and an Indian tribe.

BACKGROUND

Local district legal counsel apparently has advised that legislation is necessary if gaming compact are to be given to K-12 schools for the purpose of graduates attending postsecondary institutions, which lies beyond the K-12 scope. Therefore, an amendment to the Revised School Code was requested.

FISCAL IMPACT
There would be no fiscal impact on the State.

A local district could receive gaming funds under this legislation, but only to provide scholarships; therefore, any dollars received would be earmarked for that specific purpose.
