A resolution proclaiming March 2007 as Reading Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, The members of the Michigan House of Representatives are dedicated to providing a quality education to all children in Michigan; and
Whereas, The citizens of Michigan recognize reading as fundamental to children's education; and
Whereas, Research shows that children who read regularly, especially with adults, have greater success in schools; and
Whereas, Reading is essential to everyday life, both inside and outside of the classroom; and
Whereas, Reading can open doors and allow children to explore the entire world and beyond; and
Whereas, Reading is a cornerstone to building productive, contributing citizens; and
Whereas, Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, is a beloved children's author who has written 137 children's books and whose use of rhyme makes his books an effective tool for teaching young children the basic skills they need to be successful readers; and
Whereas, "Read Across America" is a national celebration of Dr. Seuss's 103rd birthday on March 2, 2007. It promotes reading and adult involvement in the education of our students; and
Whereas, The Michigan House of Representatives recognizes and promotes the importance of community and parental involvement in every child's success in school; and
Whereas, The Michigan House of Representatives is committed to making Michigan's children, and America's children, the best readers in the world; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body proclaim March 2007 as Reading Month in the state of Michigan.

A resolution recognizing September 13, 2007, as Buy Fresh, Buy Local, Select Michigan Day.
Whereas, The Michigan Department of Agriculture introduced the Select Michigan campaign in the Grand Rapids area to encourage Michigan residents to purchase locally grown and produced foods. Recently expanded to the Detroit area, the program uses posters, banners, and stickers in Michigan grocery stores and farmers' markets to identify locally grown food products. Since 2001, the Select Michigan program has highlighted the numerous Michigan-grown products available in the state, including apples, asparagus, blueberries, cherries, chestnuts, corn, dry beans, honey, maple syrup, peaches, and strawberries; and
Whereas, Access to fresh and nutritious food products is vital to the health and well-being of Michigan residents. Michigan farms, which are second in the nation in the diversity of agricultural products grown, provide residents with a wide variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables. Identifying and marketing these products to the local population enables residents to support Michigan's agricultural industry, which contributes significantly to Michigan's economic well-being. The impact of Michigan's agriculture on our economy is estimated to be $60.1 billion annually and growing; and
Whereas, This special day sponsored by the Michigan Integrated Food & Farming Systems and the Michigan Department of Agriculture will be set aside in September to celebrate the diversity of Michigan's agriculture; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare September 13, 2007, as Buy Fresh, Buy Local, Select Michigan Day. We encourage all Michigan citizens to "Buy Fresh and Buy Local" to support and preserve Michigan's agricultural heritage.

A resolution recognizing April 2007 as Junior Achievement Financial Literacy Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Junior Achievement has been providing programs in Michigan since the early 1950's and is an economic education non-profit organization that runs K-12 programs in class rooms throughout the state of Michigan; and
Whereas, All Junior Achievement programs involve a volunteer and hands-on activities so the students can see, feel and touch what they are learning. These programs benefit over 151,000 children in Michigan each year by promoting free enterprise, economics and business; and
Whereas, Junior Achievement partners with schools and places quality volunteers in local classrooms bridging the worlds of business and education; and
Whereas, Junior Achievement's purpose is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, economics and business in order to improve the quality of their lives; and
Whereas, The majority of financial support for Junior Achievement programs come from the business community, individuals, foundations, grants and special events; and
Whereas, Junior Achievement's mission is to ensure every child in America has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system; and
Whereas, A statewide evaluation in 2005 showed every elementary student who participated in Junior Achievement showed considerable advances in being able to apply what they had learned; and
Whereas, The statewide evaluation indicated 100 percent of the educators wanted Junior Achievement back in their classrooms; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize April 2007 as Junior Achievement Financial Literacy Month in Michigan. We commend Junior Achievement for their efforts to improve the lives of children across this state.
