SINGLE-GENDER EDUCATION S.B. 1296: COMMITTEE SUMMARY

Senate Bill 1296 (as introduced 6-7-06)
Sponsor: Senator Buzz Thomas
Committee: Education

Date Completed: 6-7-06

CONTENT
The bill would amend the Revised School Code to permit the board of a school district to establish and maintain a single-gender school, class, or program within a school if a comparable school, class, or program were available to pupils of each gender.

Currently, the Code prohibits the establishment of a separate school or department for a person on account of race, color, or sex. The bill would create an exception to this prohibition.

FISCAL IMPACT
The bill would have no fiscal impact on the State.

There could be an indeterminate fiscal impact on a local school district if establishing a single-gender school, class, or program would require the district to hire additional personnel for the school, class, or program.
