A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5480 AS INTRODUCED 12-1-05

The bill would amend the State Convention Facility Development Act to require the Department of Treasury to spend money from the State Sports Tourism Fund—upon appropriation of not more than $1 million—for Super Bowl XL Host Committee functions related to security operations.

Public Act 386 of 2004 (House Bill 6165) created the State Sports Tourism Fund specifically for hosting, staging, and carrying out Super Bowl XL activities.  The game is to be played on February 5, 2006.  Public Act 386 distributed to the new fund a portion of the revenue from the excise tax levied on hotel and motel rooms in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.  Any money remaining in the tourism fund on September 30, 2006 is to lapse to the Convention Facility Development Fund.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The bill directs the Department of Treasury to expend up to $1 million from the State Sport Tourism Fund for Super Bowl XL host committee functions related to security operations.
