Father Charles Morris of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church of Wyandotte offered the following invocation:
Here we are, O God, ready to commence on another session. So much responsibility, and yet, we feel that we can see only so far. Broken, yet blessed, we cry for a vision, for we know, as it says in Proverbs, without a vision, the people perish.
Stir in our collective imaginations new creative partnerships that cut across party, ideological, and geographical divisions. May we perceive that the challenges facing Detroit impacts Marquette and vice versa. May we be granted a holy boldness to listen to all our constituents to whom we are called to serve; to remember that the least among us count as much as the lobbyists and that the common good transcends the corporate good.
Renew in us that youthful idealism that first called us to public service, and may we remember this day what an awesome privilege this calling grants us.
Inspire us to seek sustainable solutions for our state's future by these deliberations. May we remember, as all our great faiths teach, that true power is found in collaboration and not division. May we seek win-win solutions for when we have winners and losers; eventually, we all lose. May we remember that political boundaries are only that, and we are stewards for future generations of this precious Great Lakes bioregion.
O Creator, guide us this day that we may prevail against the poison of political partisanship and affirm the good in each other's positions, even across party lines, for an aisle is just an aisle. Guide us this day that we may find common ground between the legislative and executive branch of our government for our common good. Guide us this day to seek cooperative partnerships with our neighboring states, and give us voice to speak truth to power on equity for our state, even to Washington, D.C.
May it be said that by our deliberations today that we give honor to those here and those who will come after us, even to the seventh generation, so that 200 years from now they will still look around and say, "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." Amen.
The Assistant President pro tempore, Senator Sanborn, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Senate Resolution No.38.
A resolution commemorating June 4-12, 2005, as Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week in Michigan.
Whereas, Michigan and its economy are defined by the Great Lakes and depend on its great abundance of freshwater for manufacturing, tourism, fishing, public water supplies, agriculture, and numerous other uses; and
Whereas, Preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species ultimately benefits the state of Michigan, and stopping the introduction and spread of these species would reduce the need of the state of Michigan, business, industry, and citizens to employ costly methods to control and manage them; and
Whereas, Over 160 nonindigenous aquatic invasive species have been introduced to the Great Lakes, many of which are displacing native species, disrupting habitats, degrading natural, managed, and agricultural landscapes, and damaging water-based infrastructure, resulting in millions of dollars for control efforts each year; and
Whereas, Michigan has over one million registered boaters and many other recreational, commercial, and industrial users of over 11,000 lakes and ponds and over 36,000 miles of streams in the state, many of which are impacted by aquatic invasive species; and
Whereas, Aquatic invasive species awareness is an important first step towards behavior change, which prevents the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species; and
Whereas, The introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species must be addressed by all levels of government, business, industry, environmental groups, community organizations, and citizens to protect Michigan and Great Lakes waters from the irreversible damage caused by aquatic invasive species; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That we hereby commemorate June 4-12, 2005, as Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week; and be it further
Resolved, That all citizens are encouraged to increase their understanding and awareness of aquatic invasive species and their ecological and economic impacts and take preventative measures to stop the spread and introduction of aquatic invasive species; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan Department of Agriculture, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Transportation, Office of the Great Lakes, Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Council of Great Lakes Governors, Michigan congressional delegation, and the Great Lakes Commission.
Senators Cassis, Olshove, Prusi, Schauer and Toy were named co-sponsors of the resolution.

The motion prevailed.
Senator Scott's statement is as follows:
Well, hopefully this weekend when some of us go up to Mackinac, maybe we can find a little time to talk about insurance. I think most of you know how important it is, as I've stated over and over again. It is just not in the Detroit area, but it is all over this state. I continue getting letters and my e-mails on the website for insurance redlining. So maybe just a few of us could talk about it. I would love to do that. Maybe the Chamber should get involved in this, and then maybe we will do something about it. Maybe I'll talk to them about it and we'll see. Maybe we can have a session on it soon because it is important. And then just maybe, if we do that and we take up these bills, you guys won't vote me the least effective. I understand that that is what it is probably about. It's about me standing here talking about insurance every day. Let me tell you, I will continue to talk about the high cost of insurance because it is affecting the lives of so many people in this state. I think it is time for us to do something about it.
Mr.President, I hope to see you up there in Mackinac, and maybe we can talk about insurance.
Senator Van Woerkom's statement is as follows:
I was not able to attend session yesterday because of the funeral for my mother-in-law. I would like to note for the record that had I been here, I would have been very agreeable. I would have voted "yes" on the following: Roll Call Nos. 174, 175, 176, 177, 178, 179, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, and 186.
