SUBSTITUTE FOR
SENATE BILL NO. 366
(As amended April 30, 2003)
A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
by amending sections 1526, 1526a, and 1527 (MCL 380.1526,
380.1526a, and 380.1527), section 1526 as amended and section
1527 as added by 1995 PA 289 and section 1526a as added by 1996
PA 159.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 1526. For the first 3 years of his or her employment
2 in classroom teaching, a teacher shall be assigned by the school
3 in which he or she teaches to 1 or more master teachers, or
4 college professors or retired master teachers, who shall act as a
5 mentor or mentors to the teacher. During the 3-year period, the
6 teacher <<shall also

development
7 induction into teaching, based on a professional development plan
8 that is consistent with the requirements of section 3a of article
1 II of Act No. 4 of
the Public Acts of the Extra Session of 1937,
2 being section 38.83a
of the Michigan Compiled Laws 1937
(Ex
3 Sess) PA 4, MCL 38.83a, including classroom management and
4 instructional delivery. During
the 3-year period, the intensive
5 professional
development induction into teaching shall consist of
6 at least 15 days of
professional development, the experiencing of
7 effective practices in
university-linked professional development
8 schools, and regional
seminars conducted by master teachers and
9 other mentors.
10 Sec. 1526a. Training in teaching 1 or more college level
11 equivalent courses may be included in the professional
12 development plan ,
and in the required 15 days of professional
13 development, under section 1526.
14 Sec. 1527. The board of each school district, intermediate
15 school district, or
public school academy shall provide at least
16 1 day of teacher professional
development in the 1997-1998 school
17 year, at least 2 days
of teacher professional development in the
18 1998-1999 school year,
at least 3 days of teacher professional
19 development in the
1999-2000 school year, at least 4 days of
20 teacher professional
development in the 2000-2001 school year,
21 and at least 5 days of
teacher professional development in the
22 2001-2002 school year
and each school year after the 2001-2002
23 school year. Professional
development days provided under this
24 section shall not be
counted toward the professional development
25 required under section
1526 comply with the professional
26 development requirements of the federal no child left behind act
27 of 2001, Public Law 107-110, 115 Stat. 1425.
