A bill to amend 1954 PA 116, entitled "Michigan election law," by amending section 683 (MCL 168.683). THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 683. (1) Each county clerk prior to BEFORE each pri- 2 mary and election, EACH COUNTY CLERK shall, by some reliable 3 means, notify the clerk of each township and city in the county 4 of a training school for election inspectors to be held at a 5 place designated by the county clerk within 20 days prior to 6 BEFORE each primary, general, and special election. The township 7 and city clerks shall notify each election inspector appointed to 8 serve at that election of the time and place of such THE train- 9 ing school. At such meeting A TRAINING SCHOOL, the county 10 clerk shall instruct and demonstrate the manner in which the 11 duties of election inspectors are required by law to be 06897'02 GWH 2 1 performed. It shall be the duty of the inspectors, so notified, 2 to attend such meeting 3 (2) EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN SUBSECTION (4), AN ELECTION 4 INSPECTOR NOTIFIED UNDER SUBSECTION (1) SHALL ATTEND THE TRAINING 5 SCHOOL, unless excused by the county clerk for good cause. 6 Compensation may be paid them therefor by their respective 7 municipalities at such rate as may be determined by the governing 8 bodies. No inspector of election shall serve in any election 9 unless he shall have THE MUNICIPALITY THAT APPOINTED AN ELECTION 10 INSPECTOR MAY COMPENSATE THE ELECTION INSPECTOR FOR ATTENDING A 11 TRAINING SCHOOL AT THE RATE DETERMINED BY THE MUNICIPALITY'S GOV- 12 ERNING BODY. 13 (3) AN ELECTION INSPECTOR SHALL NOT SERVE IN AN ELECTION 14 UNLESS THE ELECTION INSPECTOR HAS, within the last preceding 2 15 years, either attended an election school or shall have passed 16 satisfactorily an examination given by the election commission of 17 the city, township, or village in which appointed. The examina- 18 tion shall be IS subject to the approval of the secretary of 19 state. 20 (4) This section shall DOES not prevent the appointment of 21 an inspector of election to fill a vacancy.
