        A bill to amend 1968 PA 15, entitled

   "Correctional industries act,"

   by amending section 7 (MCL 800.327), as amended by 1996 PA 537.

               THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

             Sec. 7.  The department of corrections shall provide as

 2
        fully as practicable for the employment of inmates in tasks con-

 3
        sistent with the penal and rehabilitative purposes of their

 4
        imprisonment and with the public economy.  The types of employ-

 5
        ment shall be as follows:

 6
             (a) Routine maintenance and operation of correctional

 7
        institutions.

 8
             (b) Educational and rehabilitation activities, whether

 9
        formal or through productive or socialized activities, determined

10
        on the basis of individual needs and educability.

             (c) Productive or maintenance labor on or in connection with

 2
        the institution farms, or other land rented or leased by the

 3
        department of corrections, factories, shops, or other available

 4
        facilities for the production and distribution of correctional

 5
        industries products and services.  IN ADDITION TO ANY OTHER TYPE

 6
        OF EMPLOYMENT PROVIDED UNDER THIS SUBDIVISION, INMATES SHALL BE

 7
        EMPLOYED IN THE PRODUCTION OF CASKETS FOR THE BURIAL OF DECEASED

 8
        INDIGENT PERSONS WHOSE BURIAL IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS

 9
        STATE.  THE BURIAL CASKETS SHALL BE PROVIDED TO THE FAMILY INDE-

10
        PENDENCE AGENCY OR TO ANY OTHER STATE DEPARTMENT OR AGENCY THAT

11
        IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BURIAL OF DECEASED INDIGENT PERSONS.

             (d) Labor assignments on state public works, ways, or prop-

13
        erties when and as requisitioned by the governor or on county,

14
        township, or district roads when requested by the county board of

15
        commissioners pursuant to section 1 of  Act No. 181 of the Public

16
        Acts of 1911, being section 800.101 of the Michigan Compiled

17
        Laws  1911 PA 181, MCL 800.101.

             (e) Labor assignments in private manufacturing or service

19
        enterprises established under section 7a.
