        A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

   "The revised school code,"

   by amending section 1175 (MCL 380.1175), as amended by 1995 PA

   289.

               THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

           Sec. 1175.  (1) THE FOLLOWING ARE PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN THE

 2
      PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF THIS STATE:

 3
           (A) January 1, New Year's day.  ; the

 4
           (B) THE last Monday of May, Memorial or Decoration day.  ;

 5
           (C) July 4.  ; the

 6
           (D) THE first Monday in September, Labor day.  ; the

 7
           (E) THE FIRST TUESDAY AFTER THE FIRST MONDAY IN NOVEMBER IN

 8
      EACH EVEN NUMBERED YEAR, GENERAL ELECTION DAY.

           (F) THE fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving day.  ,

           (G) December 25, Christmas day.  , shall be public holidays

 2
      in the public schools of this state.

           (2) If 1 of  these  THE days DESCRIBED IN SUBSECTION (1)

 4
      falls on Sunday, the Monday following shall be a public holiday

 5
      in the public schools.  A school session shall not be held on the

 6
      public holidays described in this subsection in a public school

 7
      in this state.  The salary of a school officer or a teacher shall

 8
      not be affected by reason of the dismissal of school on the days

 9
      described in this subsection.

           (3)  (2) On the  A SCHOOL OFFICER OR TEACHER SHALL HAVE EACH

      SCHOOL UNDER THE OFFICER'S OR TEACHER'S CONTROL OBSERVE EACH OF

      THE FOLLOWING DAYS BY AN APPROPRIATE COMMEMORATIVE EXERCISE:

           (A) THE third Monday in January in conjunction with the fed-

14
      eral holiday, Martin Luther King, Jr. day.  ;

15
           (B) February 12, Lincoln's birthday.  ; the

16
           (C) THE third Monday of February, Washington's birthday.  ;

17
           (D) September 17, the date of the adoption of the federal

18
      constitution.  ; the

19
           (E) THE second Monday in October, Columbus day.  ; and

20
           (F) November 11, Veteran's day.  , a school officer or

21
      teacher shall have each school under the officer's or teacher's

22
      control observe the day by a proper and appropriate commemorative

23
      exercise.

           (4) A commemorative exercise UNDER SUBSECTION (3) may

25
      include or involve the assignment of schoolwork to teach the sig-

26
      nificance of the days described in  this  THAT subsection, which

27
       shall not be considered as  ARE NOT legal holidays for schools.

           Enacting section 1.  This amendatory act does not take

      effect unless Senate Bill No. _____ or House Bill No. 4054
