CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to allow an individual to operate an "electric personal assistive mobility device" on a sidewalk or any other public area open to pedestrian traffic. The bill provides that the governing body of a city, county, township, or village could not prohibit the safe operation of this device on a sidewalk or any other public area open to pedestrian traffic.
("Electric personal assistive mobility device" would mean a self-balancing, nontandem, two-wheeled device, designed to transport only one person at a time, having an electrical propulsion system with average power of 750 watts, whose maximum speed on a paved level surface, when powered solely by such a propulsion system and ridden by an operator who weighed 170 pounds, was less than 20 miles per hour.)
