A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6288 AS INTRODUCED 9-17-02
House Bill 6288 would amend Public Act 181 of 2001, which authorizes schools district to award high school diplomas to World War II veterans if they left school before graduation in order to join the armed services. The bill would extend the program to veterans of the Korean War.
Currently under the law, the board of a school district is authorized to award high school diplomas to qualified military veterans upon application, if the veterans meet five criteria. The veterans must: a) be at least 65 years of age (or have attained 65 years of age if deceased); b) have enlisted in or been drafted into the armed forces of the United States during World War II between December 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946; c) at that time have been enrolled in high school; d) have never graduated from high school; and, e) have served under honorable conditions. Under the bill, these eligibility criteria would be retained and extended to veterans of the Korean Conflict who served between June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955.
