A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6251 AS INTRODUCED 8-13-02

House Bill 6251 would amend the Revised School Code to specify that a child who was enrolled in a nonpublic school or who was being home-schooled could participate in any extracurricular activity offered by a school within the school district in which the child resided, on the same basis as students at that school. Further, the bill would prohibit school officials from interfering with the child's participation.

Under the bill, "extracurricular activity" would be defined to include any activity engaged in by pupils of a school district that is not part of the school district's academic curriculum but is in some way sponsored or endorsed by the school district or is held within or on property owned or controlled by the school district.
