A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILLS 6217 AND 6218 AS INTRODUCED 6-18-02

House Bills 6217 and 6218 would amend the Grade A Milk Law of 2001 (Public Act 266 of 2001, MCL 288.538) and the Manufacturing Milk Law of 2001 (Public Act 267 of 2001, MCL 288.696), respectively, to permit a producer who owns an animal used to produce milk or dairy products, to sell or offer for sale at least a 10 percent interest per family in the milk-producing animal to an individual, other than an on-farm family member, for only the personal use of the milk or dairy products. The bills are tie-barred to each other.

In addition, Public Act 266 requires that all milk and milk products be pasteurized. House Bill 6217 would require that all milk and milk products sold or offered for sale be pasteurized. Furthermore, House Bill 6217 would exempt instances when a producer feeds his or her own farm animals from a requirement under Public Act 266 that all dairy plant by-products used for feeding purposes for farm animals be pasteurized or be derived from pasteurized products.
