A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6216 AS INTRODUCED 6-18-02
Under the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (Public Act 451 of 1994), school administrators are required to notify parents and guardians of children attending the school of their right to be informed prior to any application of a pesticide at the school.
The bill would add certain notification requirements for all broadcast, foliar, or space pesticide applications that are made on the grounds of a school, day care center, or hospital. Specifically, the notification would have to be provided on a poster or placard, made of all-weather material in the entrance or registration area, that contains a general statement stating that periodically pesticides are used in the management of turf and ornamental pests; lists the name of an individual to whom questions or concerns regarding the pesticide application may be addressed; and lists the name of an individual who, upon request, would provide additional information. At the time of the application, the applicator would be required to post, in a conspicuous location, a sign that states the date and time of the application; common name of the pesticide; areas treated; re-entry precautions; and the name of the person who may be contacted for additional information. The posting requirement would remain in effect until the label re-entry requirements have been satisfied.
