A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5975 AS INTRODUCED 4-30-02

House Bill 5975 would amend the Revised School Code to eliminate the requirement that the state superintendent of public instruction be a part of the majority vote when the Detroit reform board appoints its chief executive officer.

Currently under the law, the Detroit school reform board appoints a chief executive officer when at least a two-thirds majority of the board members vote to do so. The law specifies that, for the first five-year period the reform board is in place, the vote to appoint the CEO must include the vote of the state superintendent of public instruction (or his or her designee). Under the bill this requirement would be eliminated.
