A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4530 AS INTRODUCED 3-27-01

House Bill 4530 would amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (MCL 324.11514) to prohibit a person from knowingly disposing of-and prohibit an owner or operator of a landfill from knowingly permitting the disposal of-a "beverage container" in a landfill. "Beverage container" would be defined as an airtight metal, glass, paper, or plastic container, or a container composed of a combination of these materials, which, at the time of sale, contained one gallon or less of a soft drink, soda water, carbonated natural or mineral water, or other nonalcoholic carbonated drink; beer, ale, or other malt drink; or a wine drink or a mixed spirit drink. (The Initiated Law of 1976 (MCL 445.572) prohibits dealers from selling, offering for sale, or giving such beverages to consumers in nonreturnable containers.)
