A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4511 AS INTRODUCED 3-22-01

The bill would amend Public Act 287 of 1969, which regulates pet shops, animal control shelters, and animal protection shelters, to include a "nonfurbearing animal" - defined to mean an amphibian or reptile - within the act's definition of "animal".

Under the act, the Department of Agriculture is required to issue rules to "establish minimum standards for housing, care and handling of animals to insure the humane care and handling of animals". The act also requires pet shops to be licensed by the department, and to comply with the act and with the department's rules. Further, the act requires animal control shelters and animal protection shelters to be registered with the department, and to comply with the act and the rules.
