A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4144 AS INTRODUCED 2-7-01
Public Act 232 of 1953, the Department of Corrections act, provides that DOC employees working in a prison or youth correctional facility who are injured in a riot or prison assault receive full benefits and full wages, or an amount that equals their full wages that is determined by adding together their worker's compensation and a supplement paid by the department. The supplement only applies while the person is on the DOC payroll and is receiving worker's compensation benefits. House Bill 4144 would extend this provision to include parole and probation officers who were injured in an assault by a probationer or parolee. Further, the bill would make this provision apply to an employee who, on the bill's effective date, was receiving worker's compensation due to an injury covered by the provision.
