A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILLS 4054 AND 4055 AS INTRODUCED 1-25-01

The bills would amend Public Act 124 of 1865 (which designates public holidays) and the Revised School Code to add general election days as official holidays. More specifically, the bills would do the following:

House Bill 4054 would amend Public Act 124 of 1865 (MCL 435.101) to add general election days (the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in each even numbered year), to the list of public holidays in the act. (Other holidays listed in the act currently include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Lincoln's birthday [February 12], Washington's birthday [the third Monday of February], Memorial or Decoration Day [the last Monday of May], Labor Day [the first Monday in September], Columbus Day [the second Monday in October], Veteran's Day [November 11], and Christmas Day [December 25]. (The act says that these days "shall be treated and considered as the first day of the week, commonly called Sunday, and as public holidays or half holidays."

House Bill 4055 would amend the Revised School Code (MCL 380.1175) to add general election days to the code's list of public school holidays.
