Statements

Senator Leland asked and was granted unanimous consent to make a statement and moved that the statement be printed in the Journal.

The motion prevailed.

Senator Leland's statement is as follows:

I don't know where I'm going with this. I've got three stories to tell. Try to follow me and stay with me. Yesterday was a profoundly sad day for me in Detroit. It was probably one of the worst days I've ever had being in politics. It started out in the morning going to a funeral service for Officer Mike Scanlon. Many of you may have read about him in the newspaper, and he was buried yesterday. He was murdered last week, stabbed several times in the neck, and he bled to death. Mike Scanlon was a neighbor of mine. He was a police officer in the precinct right behind my house. We knew him very well in the community, and he was an anchor for so many things, very well-loved and respected by my residents. He did things in the precinct that were well beyond the call of duty. In fact, the night that he was murdered, he could have just gone home, but it was when his shift was ending and he decided to make the last run of the evening. He could have called for back-up, but he didn't. He tried to apprehend the person fleeing, and as I said, he was ultimately killed.

The funeral yesterday was just incredible. It was a blue sea of police officers lined up on Grand River Avenue. There were approximately 3,000 police officers. They were there from literally all over the state, other parts of the country, and even the OPP from Toronto, the Ontario Provincial Police, sent some police officers from Toronto. It was a very well-diversified group of men and women. They were young and old, African American and white, American Indian, Arab, Christian, and Jew. It was just an incredible sight to see--all these people. They walked in the Christ the King Church where he was laid out, and 3,000 police officers saluted Mike Scanlon individually. It was a very touching ceremony.

Another one of my constituents was buried yesterday, a woman by the name of Mickey Brunges. Now no one heard about Mickey, but Mickey was a constituent who lived in my district--a very difficult part of my district. She was 91 when she passed away. The woman had a very difficult life. She raised a developmentally disabled child. Several years ago, there was a fire in her house, and her child perished. But even with all her troubles--she was widowed early on--she always attended community functions, and she was another anchor in the community. She went to all the events and participated. She mothered everybody, and you couldn't ask for a more beautiful person to be part of your neighborhood. I was very saddened that she passed away, and unfortunately, I missed her funeral yesterday. I'm certain I would have been a pallbearer there.

As I left the church yesterday after Michael Scanlon's service, I stopped at a place kinda like the local greasy spoon called Albert's Hamburger Place, and I found out some very tragic news about Mike Albert yesterday. It was just really a bad day. Mike owned the hamburger place for many, many years. In fact, about ten years ago, it was burned down, and he didn't need to rebuild. But the community just loved him and loved his hamburgers, so they asked him--pleaded with him--and Albert's rebuilt another restaurant on the same location. He spent ten years after that doing good work in the community: feeding the hungry, helping poor people, and being everything, all things to anyone who had a problem. Mike Albert was just always there, and he was a very loved individual.

Well, several months ago, Mike was robbed and was beaten to near death with a lead pipe. He actually lived through that ordeal but certainly suffered some major brain damage. I found out yesterday--and I was very sad because I found out two months after the fact--that Mike from Albert's was laid to rest a couple months ago. He died from his injuries.

I tell you these stories because we have some really good people who live in Detroit. These three people happened to live in my district--really outstanding people. We just lost three good people yesterday, and I just wanted to share that with you.
