REDUCE NUMBER OF JUDGES FOR

THE TWENTY-SEVENTH DISTRICT

House Bill 5499

Sponsor: Rep. Nancy Cassis

Committee: Family and Civil Law

Complete to 3-8-00

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5499 AS INTRODUCED 3-8-00

The bill would amend the Revised Judicature Act to reduce the number of judges in the 27th district from two to one. The 27th district is a third class district and consists of the cities of Wyandotte and Riverview. Currently, the district is divided into two divisions, each of which has one judge. Upon the existence of a vacancy in one of the judgeships or January 1, 2001 at 11:59 a.m., whichever comes first, the district will be reduced to one judge.

The bill would also strike provisions that would have allowed for the reformation of the 34th district and the creation of a 34-A district. The language is now extraneous, as the time for those changes has passed. Finally, the bill would delete references to adding judgeships in District 32-B and District 33 where the relevant dates have passed.
