Senate Bill 494 (as reported by the Committee of the Whole)

Sponsor: Senator Michael J. Bouchard

Committee: Local, Urban and State Affairs

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act to specify that the Act would not prohibit an enclosed mall or enclosed shopping center from enforcing a rule or policy that prohibited a minor under 16 years of age from being in an enclosed shopping center or enclosed shopping mall after 6 p.m. on a Friday or Saturday, unless the minor were a parent or were accompanied by a parent or another person at least 19 years of age. This provision would not apply to a movie theater.

Currently, the Act prohibits the denial to an individual of the full and equal enjoyment of a public accommodation or public service because of religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, or marital status.
