A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5836 AS INTRODUCED 5-12-98

House Bill 5836 would amend Public Act 165 of 1972, which prescribes the official pledge of allegiance to the state flag. The bill would add the words "social and economic equity," revising the pledge of allegiance to read: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of Michigan, and to the state for which it stands, 2 beautiful peninsulas united by a bridge of steel, where social and economic equity, equal opportunity, and justice to all is our ideal." Currently the pledge, originally written by Harold G. Coburn, reads: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of Michigan, and to the state for which it stands, 2 beautiful peninsulas united by a bridge of steel, where equal opportunity and justice to all is our ideal."
