House Resolution No. 270.
A resolution to call for a review of policies of Michigan financial institutions with regard to fees and service charges and to request the House Commerce Committee to hold hearings on these policies.
Whereas, Financial institutions in Michigan and across the country are undergoing significant changes in the services offered, the means used to conduct business, and the manner in which costs are assessed. With many areas of overlapping services with other types of businesses, there can be considerable confusion for many of our citizens; and
Whereas, With the changing nature of financial institutions comes new methods of bearing the cost of doing business. Several services that were previously free to customers, such as dealing with a bank teller instead of a machine, for instance, now entail a charge in some parts of the country. It is also notable that, with computerized transactions, many costs may be difficult for some consumers to identify; and
Whereas, It is appropriate for this legislative body to ensure the fairness of practices of our state's financial institutions to foster trust in this key factor in all our lives. It is also fair for the businesses offering banking services in this state to be aware of the concerns of our people and of the importance of maintaining access to these services; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we call for a review of the policies of Michigan financial institutions with regard to their fees and service charges and request hearings on this by the House Commerce Committee.
