Senate Bill 228 (as reported without amendment) Sponsor: Senator Don Koivisto

Committee: Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Commercial Fishing Law to require the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to use the testing data and conclusions obtained from publicly or privately owned laboratories or entities to analyze fish caught under the Law if the analysis of fish were required under State or Federal law, or if it were considered advisable by the DNR. A publicly or privately owned laboratory or entity that analyzed fish under the Law would have to comply with all applicable Federal and State standards and requirements and would have to have the capacity to conduct the necessary laboratory tests.

FISCAL IMPACT

The bill would have no fiscal impact on the Department of Natural Resources. At present, the Department relies on the Department of Agriculture as the regulatory agency on fish health standards.
